The Baltic School of Playback Theatre and Psychodrama (BPTPS) is a Latvian educational organisation in the field of culture that has been developing playback theatre in Latvia — in Liepāja and Riga — for three years. For us it is not only theatre but also work toward social change: a more open society, less social anxiety and more civic engagement.
What is playback theatre?
Playback theatre is a form of improvisational theatre in which actors enact, right there on stage, real stories told by the audience. The method develops empathy, listening and self-confidence, which makes it especially valuable in work with teenagers and young people.
Playback theatre as a movement of social change
When people see their own story played back and accepted without judgement, they feel heard. Out of such encounters a more open society takes shape: people worry less, trust one another more and take a more active part in the life of their community. That is what we work toward — in Liepāja, Riga and across Latvia.
What does the Baltic School of Playback Theatre and Psychodrama do?
The School creates and supports projects in Liepāja and Riga:
- teenage playback groups and regular sessions;
- performances in Latvia and abroad;
- training programmes and trips;
- work with teachers and students.
Behind every project are young people who learn to listen and to be heard, to feel freer on stage and to find their people.
What do donations go toward?
Part of this work exists thanks to your donations. Right now they help the School to:
- send young people to the 3rd Baltic Playback Gathering in Tallinn, 10–11 October;
- continue sessions with teenagers in Liepāja;
- organise a summer camp with guest trainers;
- launch free playback courses for teachers in Riga and Liepāja;
- create new performances.
