Holding the Space for Stories

Holding the Space for Stories A two-day intensive workshop.
How does a space emerge where people dare to tell their stories?
We warmly invite actors, musicians, conductors, and anyone working with playback theatre to join this workshop.
In playback there is a phenomenon sometimes described as the sideline effect — roles that stand slightly beside the main action while holding the frame of the process. Most notably, these are the conductor and the musician, who help create the conditions in which stories can be heard, unfold, and find their stage expression.

During the training we will:

  • explore the role of the conductor and how they hold the structure and atmosphere of a playback performance
  • practice interviewing the teller — listening deeply and supporting the story as it moves to the stage
  • work with the rhythm and dramaturgy of a playback event
  • explore the sideline effect and the supporting roles of conductor and musician
  • practice improvisation, listening, and ensemble awareness while working with playback forms.

About the trainers
Synne and Jan Platander have been working with playback theatre since 1995. They founded Teater X in Stockholm and currently run Skandinavisk Playbackteater Studio, an affiliated school of the Centre for Playback Theatre (CPT).
Synne is a facilitator, coach, and drama teacher with a Master’s degree in Drama and Theatre. She has extensive experience in adult education and works with themes of inclusion and dialogue through theatre.
Jan is a teacher, psychodramatist, organisational consultant, and trainer of Action Methods. He combines playback theatre, psychodrama, and other creative approaches in his work with groups and organisations, and is also a passionate playback musician.
Together they create a playful and safe learning space where people can explore stories, deepen their stage sensitivity, and connect with one another.
