On 12–13 September, a new group started the Playback Theatre Core Training in Riga. The sessions ran at “Willa Teātris” (Stabu 18C), and the Baltijos Playback Teatro ir Psichodramos Mokykla led them. So the first of two modules is now complete. And, judging by these two days, the group is off to a strong start.
What Playback actually is
Playback is not theatre in the usual sense. Instead, it is a living art of improvisation. First, a member of the audience tells a story from their own life. Then the actors bring it back, here and now, on stage. Importantly, you don’t need to be a professional actor. The desire to try, to play, and to listen is enough. Yet before stepping in front of an audience, participants first travel toward themselves. And that is exactly where the training begins.
Two days, and a new view of the world
A great deal can happen in just two days. For example, one participant is a mature man with a serious profession in business. At the end, he simply said: “My view of the world has changed.” Two days. Indeed, moments like these are what it is all for.
Playback is for people — for everyone who wants it. We believe we can change the world for the better. We do it through warmth, an open stance, honesty, sincerity, and courage. Above all, though, we change it starting with ourselves.
About the Playback Theatre Core Training
Dr. psych. Marija Bambulaka leads the course. She is a psychodramatist, an accredited Playback Theatre trainer (CPT, New York), and a co-founder of the school. Next, the second module follows on 24–25 October. It continues the journey they have begun — and this time, they prepare a real performance. In total, the Core Training runs for 30 hours across two weekends. Finally, everyone receives a certificate on completion. The languages of study are Latvian, English, and Russian. In addition, the International Center of Professional Excellence “Vaiņode” supports the course.
